Big Aerial Pictures

aerial-glencairn

This picture is of Glencairn beach, looking up Glencairn valley. The road goes left to Simonstown and right to Fishhoek, with the road over the mountain going to Ou Kaapse Weg, which leads to Cape Town. Southern Right Hotel is at the left hand side of the beach, overlooking the vlei. There is a nice child friendly tidal pool to the left of the beach.

Simonstown has a long history of being a Navy town. Initially, Simons Town was a winter anchorage for visiting ships. Table Bay at Cape Town was too rough to be a safe anchorage, before the sea walls and harbour were built. It took two days to travel overland to Cape Town. There was a Hotel/ Guest house at Muizenberg, which served as a popular half way stop.

The nice expensive Corvettes from the controvercial arms deal live here. In the picture, one can be seen in the old dry dock. The 3 others are waiting for fuel, crew or funding.

If you look carefully, you can see the top of one of the new submarines.

aerial-cape-point
The classic Cape Point photo from the air. It is hard to imagine this is the feared Cape of Storms that has claimed many ships and their crew, including the legendary Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that is still trying to get around the point. The light house can be seen. The brick building lower down the mountain is the old light house.
